About the Exhibition｜展覧会について:
The Best Of Luck (ラッキー) is a collection of new and past artworks centered around symbols of good fortune and messages of hope. This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the ways we wish each other well and find comfort in luck, chance, and kindness—both big and small.
『The Best Of Luck（ラッキー）』は、「幸運」や「希望」のメッセージをテーマにした、新作と過去の作品を集めた展示です。「ラッキー」という言葉に込められた優しさや願いを通して、日常の中にある偶然や祈りについて考えるきっかけとなれば幸いです。

Interview with Dennis Sun: The Best Of Luck
デニス・サンへのインタビュー：（ラッキー）
This September, Tully's Coffee in Shinjuku, Tokyo, will be transformed into a vibrant space of color, nostalgia, and hope. Visual artist Dennis Sun, a Filipino creator based in Japan, presents "The Best Of Luck (ラッキー)," a solo exhibition running from September 1 to October 31, 2025. Through a collection of new and previous works, the show explores good luck symbols and personal talismans in uncertain times.
We sat down with the artist to talk about the exhibition's themes, process, and what "luck" really means.
Q: Your new exhibition is titled "The Best Of Luck (ラッキー)." Where did the idea come from?
A: The idea started with a simple question: What do we hold on to when things feel uncertain? I noticed how people turn to small symbols—charms, gestures, sayings—for comfort. "Good luck" can be something you say without thinking, but sometimes, it's a quiet wish full of hope. I wanted to explore that.
How did you choose the pieces for this exhibition?
The exhibition features a mix of old and new works. Some older pieces already played with the idea of luck and superstition, and I felt they still had something to say in this context. The newer works were made specifically with this theme in mind—drawing from both Filipino and Japanese lucky symbols like the daruma, maneki-neko, anting-anting, and even lucky colors. There’s a lot of layering, personal memories, and playful detail.
How has living in Japan influenced your art?
Japan has a quiet poetry in how it treats everyday life and rituals. There’s deep symbolism in objects here—from seasonal customs to shopfront charms. Being immersed in that has definitely deepened my attention to detail and appreciation for everyday “magic.” At the same time, I bring my Filipino lens, which is full of its own superstitions, humor, and warmth. The combination is very present in this show.
What do you hope visitors will feel or take away from this exhibition?
I hope they leave with a smile—or at least a sense of warmth. Maybe a little curiosity about their own personal lucky objects or rituals. We all need reminders that we're not alone in hoping for something good. Especially now.
Why a coffee shop? Why Tully’s in Shinjuku?
I like the idea of art living in everyday spaces. Not everyone walks into a gallery, but many people stop by a café. It’s where people slow down, take a break, or meet friends—an environment that feels natural, warm, and human. It felt right to present this exhibition about quiet hope and good luck in a space that’s open and accessible.
Tully’s is one of my favorite cafés in Japan—the coffee is great, and the atmosphere is always lively. Their Shinjuku branch is especially vibrant, full of both locals and visitors from around the world. Since Shinjuku is one of the busiest places in Tokyo, it felt like the perfect spot to share this work with as many people as possible.
Last question—do you believe in luck?
I believe in the power of small things—kindness, timing, intention. Whether that’s called luck, magic, or something else doesn’t matter. Sometimes, the belief itself is what helps us keep going.

今年の9月、東京・新宿のタリーズコーヒーが、色彩とノスタルジー、そして希望に満ちた空間へと生まれ変わります。日本を拠点に活動するフィリピン出身のビジュアルアーティスト、デニス・サンによる個展「The Best Of Luck（ラッキー）」が、2025年9月1日から10月31日まで開催されます。新作と過去作品を織り交ぜた展示は、不確かな時代における幸運のシンボルや個人的なお守りについて探ります。
今回は、展覧会のテーマや制作過程、「ラッキー」とは何かについて、アーティスト本人にお話を伺いました。
Q：「The Best Of Luck（ラッキー）」というタイトルのアイデアはどこから来たのですか？
A：すべては「不安な時、私たちは何を拠り所にするのか？」というシンプルな問いから始まりました。人々が小さなお守りや仕草、言葉に安心を求める様子に気づいたんです。「グッドラック」って、つい何気なく言ってしまう言葉ですが、時には希望を込めた静かな願いでもある。そこを掘り下げてみたかったんです。
Q：今回の展示作品はどのように選びましたか？
新作と過去の作品をミックスしています。以前の作品の中には、すでに幸運や迷信をテーマにしていたものがあり、それらは今でも語るべきことがあると感じました。新作はこの展示のために制作したもので、フィリピンや日本のラッキーアイテム――たとえば、だるま、招き猫、アンティンアンティン（護符）、ラッキーカラーなど――からインスピレーションを得ています。個人的な記憶や遊び心のあるディテールを重ねています。
Q：日本での生活は、あなたの作品にどのような影響を与えましたか？
日本には、日常の中の儀式やものごとに詩的な静けさがあります。季節の行事やお店の前の飾りなど、あらゆる物に意味が込められていて、そうした文化に触れることで細部への意識が高まり、「日常の魔法」のようなものを大切に思うようになりました。一方で、フィリピン的な視点――迷信やユーモア、温かさ――も持ち続けていて、それらがこの展示にも色濃く現れていると思います。
Q：来場者にはどんなことを感じ取ってほしいですか？
できれば笑顔になってほしいですね。あるいは、心が少し温かくなるような感覚でもいい。自分自身のラッキーアイテムや習慣について、ちょっとでも興味を持ってくれたら嬉しいです。私たちは皆、何か良いことを願って生きているんだということを、思い出せる時間になればと思います。今だからこそ、特に。
Q：なぜコーヒーショップ？ なぜ新宿のタリーズなのでしょうか？
私は、アートが日常の空間に存在することに魅力を感じています。ギャラリーに足を運ぶ人は限られていますが、カフェにはたくさんの人が訪れます。人が一息ついたり、友達と会ったりする、少し立ち止まる場所。そんな、誰にとっても身近で温かい空間に、希望や幸運をテーマにした今回の展示を置くのは自然なことのように思いました。
タリーズコーヒーは日本中にあるカフェの中でも特にお気に入りで、コーヒーもとても美味しいです。新宿の店舗は日本人も外国人もたくさん集まる、とてもにぎやかな場所。新宿は東京で一番人が行き交う街なので、多くの人に作品を見てもらえる絶好の場所だと思いました。
Q：最後の質問です。あなたは「運」を信じますか？
小さなものの力――親切さ、タイミング、思い――は信じています。それを「運」と呼ぶか、「魔法」と呼ぶかはあまり重要ではないかもしれません。時には、その信じる気持ち自体が、私たちを前に進ませてくれるのだと思います。
Dennis Sun is a Filipino artist based in Tokyo, Japan, whose work bridges symbols, stories, and the quiet spaces in between. For the past few decades, he has exhibited his art uncountable times in Japan and abroad, sharing images of hope, humor, and transformation through both solo and group shows.
His artistic practice draws from childhood memories, cultural superstitions, everyday poetry, and the small but powerful moments of human connection. Inspired by themes like luck, longing, and resilience, Dennis creates work that is both personal and playful—where lucky charms, gentle lines, and vivid colors become quiet messages of encouragement and joy.
Before dedicating himself fully to his art, Dennis worked as a graphic designer and illustrator. With years of experience in creative industries, he brings a sharp eye, thoughtful storytelling, and heartfelt intention to everything he makes. Now, his focus is on art that uplifts, calms, and brings light—art that promotes love, peace, and positive energy in the world.
